Sashiko Visible Mending Kit

Sashiko Visible Mending Kit . Packaging Design . 2024

Sashiko (刺し子, “little stabs”) is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan. Traditional sashiko was used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places or tears with patches.

Sashiko Visible Mending Kit is a package / product I created for consumers interested in learning basic Sashiko stitching. The package comes with one pair of scissors, one sewing needle, scrap fabric, thick string, and a wash-away pattern. I designed this kit to feel raw and delicate, like Sashiko. The package unfolds flat for easy use, this design is inspired by fabric roll-up sewing kits. The compartments for the scrap fabric and the string are stuck to the package with Velcro. These compartments can be removed and placed where needed while stitching. This package is designed to take up little space and is meant to be used multiple times for storage and to be refilled with your own scraps, string, and needles.
