"I learned how to ski barefoot on the Cohansey River. One time when I was down there me and my friend Johnny solemn skied naked from Maryland to New Jersey. We got so hungry our friend Zimmerman started throwing us cookies from the boat." -Excerpt from SOUTH

SOUTH Magazine was created to show my hometown to the world. SOUTH explores the lives of the people who grew up there and their most memorable experiences. I wanted to make the reader feel as if they experienced South Jersey as I did. In this issue of SOUTH Magazine I talk to business owners, tradesmen, farmers, and all sorts of folks!

This issue of SOUTH Magazine was created with 8 interviews and over 500 photographs using digital, film, and found photos.

I drew inspiration from Colors Magazine, country design, and the cultural influence of South Jersey.

What’s this all about?

South is a magazine about places that call themselves south. I.E, South Bronx, South Philly, South Virginia, South Dakota, etc. It’s less about the location on a map and more about the southerness that name entails. The question that we try to answer is, “What does it feel like to be native to that place?”

It’s not about the location, it’s more about the people that experienced that location.  Without that experience it’s just a place without meaning. An old abandoned house seems dirty and vacant, but years ago a family lived there, and called that place home. That’s why people call it home, not because of where it is, or what you can do there, but because of the memories and experiences they had there. The feeling of home only exists in the mind of the person that lived there. This magazine pulls back the curtains on those experiences and lets the reader experience just a taste of what it felt like. I want to make the reader feel as if they know how it feels to live in that place, even if it’s just for a moment. I want the reader to understand why people call these places home. This magazine will cover funny stories, hard times, and how it feels to call this place home. New York City is just a place filled with metal structures and concrete but what makes it appealing are the people that live there and the experiences they’ve had. In this issue we cover Southern New Jersey.
